Basic Question Types

There are 3 basic types of question:

มีคำถามพื้นฐานอยู่ 3 ประเภท คือ

1. Yes/No Questions (The question begins with an auxiliary verb, and the answer to the question is "Yes" or "No".)

Yes/No Questions เป็นคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย auxiliary verb และต้องการคำตอบ Yes หรือ No

2. Question Word Questions (The question begins with question words such as What, Which, When, Where, Why, How, Who, Whom, Whose, and the answer to the question is "Information".)

Question Word Questions เป็นคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย question words เช่น What, Which, When, Where, Why, How, Who, Whom, Whose และต้องการคำตอบที่เป็นข้อมูล

3. Choice Questions (The question begins with an auxiliary verb, and there is ‘or’ in the sentence in order for the respondent to choose one of the choices that are already in the question as the answer to the question.)

Choice Questions เป็นคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย auxiliary verb และมีคำว่า ‘or’ อยู่ในประโยคเพื่อให้ผู้ตอบเลือกคำตอบซึ่งมีอยู่ในประโยคคำถามแล้ว

การใช้ Why

why adverb, conjunction

1. used to ask or talk about the reason for something:

ใช้เพื่อถามหรือพูดเกี่ยวกับเหตุผลสำหรับสิ่งใด

Example:

· Why are you crying?

· Why do we have to take all these tests?

· 'She wants to meet you.' 'Why?'

· 'I won't be able to come into work tomorrow.' 'Why not?'

· I have no idea why the television isn't working.

· Simon loves you - that's why he wants to be with you.

· He's angry with me and I don't know why.

· There's no reason why we shouldn't be friends.

why on earth/why ever etc (=used for emphasis when you are surprised, angry etc ใช้พูดเน้นเมื่อแปลกใจหรือโกรธ)

· Why on earth didn't you ask me to help?

· 'I don't want us to be seen together.' 'Why ever not?'

2. used to introduce a question that shows you do not think it is necessary to do something:

ใช้พูดนำในคำถามที่แสดงว่าคุณคิดว่าไม่จำเป็นที่จะต้องทำสิ่งใด

Example:

· Why worry? You can't do anything about it.

· Why waste time going to the bank when you can do it all over the Internet?

3. spoken why not? used to say that you agree with a suggestion:

ใช้พูดว่าคุณเห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอแนะ

Example:

· 'We could invite John and Barbara.' 'Yes, why not?'

4. spoken why doesn't somebody do something?

a) also why not do something? used to make a suggestion:

ใช้เพื่อเสนอแนะ

Example:

· Why don't you bring over a video for us to watch?

· Why not relax and enjoy the atmosphere?

b) used to say angrily that someone should do something:

ใช้พูดด้วยความโกรธว่าผู้ใดควรจะทำสิ่งใด

Example:

· Why don't you mind your own business?

5. spoken why somebody? used to ask why a particular person has been chosen or is suffering:

ใช้เพื่อถามว่าทำไมถึงต้องเป็นฉัน ทำไมฉันต้องมาลำบากด้วย

Example:

· Why me? Why can't someone else drive you?

6. spoken why oh why ...? used to show that you are very sorry or angry about something:

ใช้เพื่อแสดงว่าคุณเสียใจหรือโกรธมากเกี่ยวกับสิ่งใด

Example:

· Why oh why did I say those horrible things?
